A pleasant day shooting, with a good mixture of targets. The day was dry, and a wind that varied. On the whole quite testing, well Graham didn’t make 40, so must have been hard.

Our Quainton shoot had a large turn out. All the shooting was from on top of the old railway embankment. HS2 are back, and access to the field we sometimes shoot from is now closed. This might have been the last time we shoot at Quainton. HS2 are taking over more land then was originally envisaged.
The weather was kind, and became quite balmy by the end of the shoot, with many members stripping of excess clothing to remain cool. Today’s shoot was a mixture. A couple of card filler stands to build confidence and some very demanding stands to destroy what remaining confidence you still had. How can a slow incomer be so difficult to shoot? The going away teal had to be shot quickly, otherwise, it was at the boundary of the field. Still, there were still some high scores above 40.
This shoot was also the first one since shooting resumed after lock-down where we were requested to help clear up. Not an onerous task for us, a quick pickup of the clays which we deposited next to the traps, and then the team did the rest.

Another post lockdown shoot set up by Brian’s team. A dry sunny day, with a strong gusty wind, provided some skittish targets which moved around. The strong wind was reflected in the lower scores. Well, at least that is my excuse. Short of cartridges, then remember DB Guns is open late on a Friday.

Following the success of the previous shoot and the dedication of Brian’s team, our second post lockdown shoot was held at Quainton. This was held in a similar format as before. Again we were treated to some fine weather and a good set up. I heard several comments from shooters who thought the layout was good. A mixture of some easy birds, (yes the author did straight one stand), and far more demanding stands. Something for everyone. It was lovely to get out and see everyone enjoying themselves. A big thank you again to Buckinghamahsire gun shop DB guns for setting up the excellent shoot.

Our first shoot since the start of Lockdown was held at Doddershall. The shoot was held in a different format than usual. Members-only and pre-booking were required to shoot. We were grouped into squads of six before arrival. On arrival, a short introductory briefing on how we were to proceed around the shoot, how to button and score the cards. Hand sanitiser was available on all the stands. There were 39 shooters, so six squads of six and three more to shoot after the six squads had competed.
After we had shot we immediately left, leaving behind Brian, Eli and Dawn to clear up. A really great thank you to DB Guns for running this shoot for us. The weather was good, it was nice to be out shooting in the pleasant countryside in shorts and tee shirt again. We must not forget the landowners who let us shoot on their fields. Without them, we could not pursue our sport.

After a break caused by torrential rain and waterlogged fields, it was good to be back shooting clays again. The rain mainly held off for the shoot, but a light drizzle did start before the end of the shoot. Today’s shoot was fairly compact, saving on walking and tramping across the wet fields. Will the numbers of shooters decrease when the older members have to start isolating themselves in the next few weeks? Time will tell.

Lovely bright sunny and frosty morning brought out over 40 members and guests for the shoot. The cold weather did reduce the power of the radio transmitters, causing some technical issues. Stand four was demanding. The number of pickups on that stand was a testament to birds that got away.

The practice shoot was held at Ludgershall. Wet ground conditions meant parking on the road. No rain and a gentle breeze. Some of the clay targets were quite demanding.

After the weeks of rain, it was decided not to allow unnecessary vehicles on the shooting field. Instead, we would meet at Ludgershall village hall and be transported to the field by a vintage tractor (1980 Fiat) and trailer. Two trips were required. We can thank Jim for arranging this mode of transport. It was a fun start and end to the shoot.
Awaiting us at the shooting ground we had five stands of ten birds each. These were beautifully set up by Brian and his team, along with festive Christmas names. This was also the first outing of new safety cages, strong and light. As you can see from the picture, the field was truly waterlogged. Despite the cloud, there was no rain to spoil the fun. The breeze did add a chill to the air, 8C feels like 5C.
Wet Wet Wet
After the tea and coffee break, (please remember to bring your mug), we had a flurry shoot. Teams of three were randomly picked and shot the flurry. Deceptively slow at first, putting you at ease, until two fast, demanding flurries at the end. The final two stands of the fifty bird shoot then completed the shoot. In all 36 members and friends shot.
Village Hall and Lunch
Back at the Ludgershall village hall lunch had been prepared. An excellent buffet meal of meats, salads, baked potatoes and desserts. A big thank you to Celia, Shirley and Ann. After the meal, the prize giving.
